We first saw Ellis Chen latest collection at LFWM, via the University of Southampton BA show. We found it all very eye catching. The colour red was very prominent, with pieces that would make anyone stand out if worn at a function or event. We decided to feature her as we think she is one to watch.
1. Tell us about how or when Ellis Chen fell in love with fashion?
I’ve enjoyed art and design ever since I was young. I loved to draw people and design characters and the clothes they wear. Eventually, I started to learn more textiles and sewing techniques. It was so fulfilling to watch the designs become real garments that people could wear
2. Is it safe to say red is your favourite colour? Or is that just
your latest collection?
I chose to have an all red collection because it is a very significant colour in Chinese culture – representing prosperity, good fortune, and happiness. As my graduate collection was focused on my cultural identity and combining Eastern and Western culture, it felt right to use red.
3. How has your experience at WSA been?
I have learnt and achieved so much at Winchester School of Arts. It’s been an intense few years but the tutors and other students are very supportive. I am thankful for my experience there.
4. What’s the best thing you’ve learnt do you think?
To be patient with my work process and to believe in myself.
5. Tell us a bit about the materials you us and how you source them
The fabrics used in my collection consisted of a range of weights and textures. I like to contrast soft and floaty fabrics with something solid and bold. One of my favourite fabrics I used was Ultrasuede. I knew I didn’t want to use animal products and researched alternatives. I came across this ethical and sustainable suede that is manufactured with recycled polyester. The Ultrasuede company were kind enough to sponsor me with free samples of their innovative fabric.
6. Describe your signature aesthetic in a few words
Feminine, fierce, contemporary.
7. If you were to pick one designer to dress you every day, who would
it be? Yourself excluded.
Sarah Burton is doing an wonderful job as the creative director for Alexander McQueen. I would love to wear garments with such exceptional detail and design.
8. How did it feel watching your collection on the catwalk at LFWM?
Leading up to the show, I was nervous. But I was relieved and excited to see my collection walking down the catwalk. It felt like all my hard work had finally come together.
9. What have been the highs and lows thus far?
The high is definitely being chosen to show in London and seeing my work on the catwalk. Although it’s been a rollercoaster journey, it’s difficult to think of a particular low. I guess the stress that comes along with making a 6 outfit collection by yourself was the most challenging aspect to deal with.
10.What’s next for Ellis Chen?
I plan to keep making and selling clothes and accessories. I love seeing other people wear something I have made. I also plan to step into the industry and learn more about the field of fashion. I aspire to travel and work in new and exciting cities and experience all that I can.
