We spotted Cherie Jones in a Shoreditch side street looking extra fashionable, and we have been fans of her style ever since, and more importantly, we are huge fans of her music. We caught up with her for a few words.
How did Jones get into music?
Music is something that’s been with me for as long as I can remember – it was an escape from reality and my happy place. Sheer persistence and love of what I do is how I’ve done everything so far, by staying creative and determined…
Where are you currently based?
I’m based in East London which is where I grew up, I’ve moved house every year for the past 5 years or so, it’s stressful but also nice to reset in a new place. So we’ll see where I’ll be next year.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is modern soul/pop – with roots in old classic soul songs and branches reaching over to more recent and contemporary sounds, a bit of a hybrid!
Let’s talk fashion. How would you describe your personal style?
I think my style is pretty casual, generally found in jeans and t-shirts but love to wear colour – it completely brightens up my mood, feels like I’m expressing my personality more and I definitely find it more inspiring than wearing all black. Rarely found in heels, mostly in Dr Marten’s and Nike’s.
Any item in your wardrobe you’d happily wear everyday?
I love wearing colourful headbands right now! An easy way to brighten up whatever I’m wearing and highly practical when you have unruly mixed-race hair that doesn’t feel like cooperating with you !
If you were to have one big designer dress you everyday, who would it be?
Jacquemus Jacquemus Jacquemus…!
Tell us one thing that would surprise many people about Jones?
I used to work in a nightclub before I was signed…
Whats the one essential beauty or fashion item that you take with you with everywhere?
My eyebrow pencils! I have Casper-the-Ghost eyebrows without this little helper…
What city have you been to on your travels that you absolutely LOVE?New York, New Yorkkkk…. and Copenhagen! I’ve been on writing trips to both and want to spend more time in each. NYC turns me into a shameless tourist but it’s a great feeling to be excited just by walking down the sidewalk. CPH feels like a beautiful way of life and I sometimes think about moving there…
Whats next for Jones in 2019 and beyond?
I am deep into album-writing, that’s me for the rest of the year, but it’s possibly my favourite part. It’s almost there and it’s magical to feel it taking shape and taking its first breaths of life. I feel more defined than before and freer in my expression. I will be releasing the first song early 2020 and I’m counting down until then but totally enjoying just being in the present moment!
