Fashion Blogging – by Freya Sinyu Siu
We’ve spotted Freya at London Fashion Week for years. She always commands quite the attention with the photographers. She has a unique style, and is never afraid to accessorise her face! We had a chat with her to find out more on most things fashion blogging.
1. At what age did you fall in love with fashion? Tell us how it all started.
It was when I was 16 and i was still in high school student that I fell in love with fashion. I thought the courses in high school were boring, especially math, so I began to read fashion magazines in class. I can still recall the first fashion magazine that I read was borrowed from my desk mate. I was attracted by the stylish girl in various kinds of clothes, and I began to devote myself to matching clothes. Gradually, my interests in fashion intensified, and then I also gradually got to know about all the fashion-related stuff like fashion photography, modelling, blogging and so on.
2. Do you bloggers really get a lot of free stuff send to them as everyone says they do?
I thought it was a secret, ha-ha. It doesn’t mean that bloggers have nothing to do after receiving these so-called free stuff. As a blogger, I have to spend my time and energy on a series of things when I get the product, including getting to know about the product itself, using it, taking pictures for it, analysing it objectively and writing my true feelings after using it and posting it to social media, etc. The whole process is entertaining, but it’s not simple work to do.
3. Which leads to a question some of us wonder about a lot. What if a brand sends you something you find absolutely ghastly to wear? How do you navigate those waters, if they keep nudging you to wear and post their product?
It sounds like a terrible thing. Usually, I will cooperate with my favourite and trustworthy brands, and I only accept clothes that are suitable for me. However, if I receive something that I don’t like, I would try to re-match it with other decorations or accessories. I then hope that the clothes can be re-interpreted in my own way because I believe there’s no absolutely horrible clothes in the world.
4. Tell us something you think people don’t appreciate about fashion blogging
I think there might be still a small group of people holding the opinion that fashion blogging and bloggers are not real jobs or occupations, and they might even think it’s insane.
5. We notice you love to accessories your face? Tell us more about the thought process behind that?
I often gain inspirations of make-up, hairstyle and matching from fashion magazines and Instagram. I was encountered with a picture at Instagram, where the model was wearing jewels on her face. It inspired me to use some small objects like pearls, metal decorators, bling-bling powder and so on when I make up, which can make my style more interesting and individualised.
6. Any favourite items in your wardrobe you could happily wear every day if you could?
An oversize black suit that I found in a flea market. I like its texture and shape, so I wear them frequently.
7. Says on your Instagram you are born in China, but based in London, what would you say is the biggest differences between Chinese and British fashion? Do you sometimes mix both styles?
British fashion tends to be brave and modern, and their designs are creative while Chinese fashion combines delicate details with great skills, and with artisan spirits and mood. I often mix the elements of British fashion and Chinese one in my fashion matching, because I like the aesthetics created by the collision of modern and traditional elements.
8. Who is the one designer you’d love to get dressed by? If you had to choose your absolute favourite.
It’s Kate Han, who operates her brand Mukzin, which is a Chinese brand. The reason is that Kate is good at mixing and matching traditional Chinese elements with her original modern costume design, for example, she created refined Han clothes and new-shaped Qi-Pao bringing about a neo-orientalist aesthetic language in a brand-new dimension. Last year, she was in London Fashion Week with her brand, and I was invited to her show at that time. I have to say that it was as exciting as it gets!
9. How much do you enjoy fashion blogging? What are the best highs?
For me, a fashion blog is a space which totally belongs to me, where I can put in all my feeling, joys, and sorrows. Here I can find an excellent way to express myself, which is fond of life and fashion. That may be the reason why I love fashion blogging.
10. What’s next for Freya?
I believe that everyone knows “made in China,” but my dream is to make more people know “Fashion in China.” I remember my first time at London Fashion Week I was wearing a black mantle from H&M with a beret and a pair of glasses that I bought from a vintage fair, out of much to my surprise, my look was praised by many fashion people and photographers. However, the question that I was asked the most was “Are you from Japan?” It was then i realised that many people equalled Asian fashion with Japanese fashion. Therefore, I chose clothes that were designed with more Chinese elements, by Chinese designer, in my next visits to Fashion Week. I’d like to let everyone know that I came from China and wear Chinese designs. And my next plan is to complete my next master’s degree and make more and more people get to know about Chinese fashion.
