We spotted Shaqun nurse’ work on twitter. Found him on instagram, found at @j_quanphoto. Then we decided to have a chat with him to find about more about him & his work. Full feature found in the latest PRINT edition.
How did you get into photography?
It was about 4 years ago , I used to take a lot of photos with my cellphone and my friend told me how good they looked , she then told me I should invest in a camera . The magic started from there.
What’s your favourite thing to photograph?
I would say portraits , there’s a lot of vehemence you can get from a person and that’s what I try to capture the most.
Tell us about Barbados fashion. How would you best describe it?
I would describe it as being very preeminent. I’ve spent my time around many designers from around the globe but I haven’t encountered any thus far that are like the ones from home . That being said I know there are a lot more fashion designers that have so much potential but just in need of more recognition.
Shall we safely assume the warm beautiful island make for beautiful backgrounds?
Well In most aspects I would say yes but you can literally make anywhere a beautiful background , it’s more so the photographer that has the eye to make it work.
How did the bald & beautiful shoot come about?
Jalisa, one of the models, shot me a message and showed me a mood board of an idea she had for a shoot for women’s day. Basically just wanted to show that there’s still beauty in women who shaved their heads going around the stigma of bald headed women . She put the models together and it just fell into play.
Do you think there is a general acceptance of the beauty of short hair on women now?
Now , yes there is . It’s the 21st century, people are espousing new lifestyles more than they did in the past . That being said I know there’re a lot of folks out there who are somewhat afraid of being judged , as I said it’s the 21st century embrace yourself and explore your beauty.
We spotted your talents on twitter, and then communicated via instagram. How well does social media work for you?
I’m lucky enough to say we have social media as a tool , a lot of us now probably wouldn’t have gotten as far as we did if it wasn’t for social media and I personally find it to be a game changer in engaging with people and just showing off what I created.
Talk to us about your personal style. How would you best describe it?
That’s actually a difficult one because it changes all the time. Some days it’ll be moody other times it’ll be vibrant so it all depend on what mood I’m in that would cause my personal style to change.
What are the highs and lows of a Barbados based photographer?
First high would be location , as long as you know people and build a great connection you will find so many cool places to shoot that you never thought would be on the island. That low , this is where recognition meets popularity especially since we’re on an island that’s saturated with talent and loads of photographers , you have to push extra hard just to get your work out there to be seen
What’s next for you this year? Post Covid19 era that is.
Well to stay in doors for the immediate future that’s for sure , I don’t think I’ll be shooting again for the year even if it blows over . Just taking the time to come up with new ideas and take time to grow and stay healthy.
